Who Can Join?

These volunteering opportunities in Jordan are thoughtfully tailored to cater to a wide spectrum of individuals. This includes graduate and undergraduate students specializing in Middle Eastern studies and Arabic studies; enthusiasts of social science; professionals, employees of human rights organizations; scholars engaged in case studies of the Middle East; humanitarian aid workers, social workers, teachers, native English speakers, non-native speakers, and anyone with a genuine passion for immersing themselves in Arabic culture and daily life.

Program Location – Jabal Al-LweibdehAmman

Our volunteering programs are held at Badr Ad Din Zaza, 11190 Amman, the capital of Jordan, where participants can experience the richness of Jordanian culture and daily life. To further enhance your experience and provide deeper engagement and cultural understanding, we organize visits to Jordanian universities, factories, and with local families.

Our program is located in Jabal Al-Lweibdeh, one of the most important neighborhoods in Amman. This area is distinguished by its central location in the capital, approximately a 15-minute walk from downtown and west of the Abdali district, home to Abdali Boulevard, the largest modern market in Jordan.

Jabal Al-Lweibdeh attracts diverse groups of people, including Arabs and Westerners, who come to enjoy the neighborhood’s social life and cultural energy. It is considered the cultural and social center of Amman and is home to numerous art galleries and tourist bazaars. The area also offers many cafes and restaurants serving both local and international food.

Many foreigners who come to Jordan to work or study choose to live in Jabal Al-Lweibdeh, as they find it a peaceful and comfortable place that blends modern life with Jordanian culture and the history of the region. Every street and building in the neighborhood features murals with meaningful stories, and many of its streets are bustling with visitors who consider Al-Lweibdeh their favorite spot in Amman because it reflects the fragrance of the past and the charm of traditional Jordanian life.

Selecting the Right Location

There are many places across Jordan where you can volunteer, so it’s important to consider which location best suits your goals and interests. While some remote areas may be more difficult to access or offer fewer structured programs, Amman and other major cities provide safe, accessible, and well-organized opportunities for international volunteers. Travel within Jordan is generally easy, and volunteers can move between cities comfortably.

This means you can choose between locations such as Amman, Irbid, Zarqa, Madaba, Salt, and Jerash. Each city has its own character—some are more traditional, while others are more modern and lively—but all offer unique advantages depending on what you hope to experience.

So, What to Keep an Eye Out for?

The best location for you depends on what matters most. For those interested in culture and history, cities like Amman, Madaba, Jerash, and Salt offer strong cultural immersion and historical significance. If you prefer a youthful atmosphere with cafés, arts, and social activities, Amman—especially neighborhoods like Jabal Al-Lweibdeh or Jabal Amman—may be the perfect fit. If affordability is a major factor, cities outside the capital, such as Irbid or Zarqa, are often more budget-friendly. Researching your priorities will help you determine which location aligns best with your expectations.

Selecting the Right Organization

Most organizations offering volunteer programs in Jordan aim to support their communities, but it is always wise to do your own research before choosing one. Reading testimonials from former volunteers and checking reviews—if available—can help you assess the reliability and reputation of each organization.

An organization may have a mission you strongly support, but if its programs are poorly organized, the volunteer experience may not be as meaningful or enjoyable. It is essential to find a well-managed organization that maintains a balance between serving the local community and providing volunteers with structured, helpful guidance.

Selecting the Right Program

The same principles apply when choosing the right volunteer program. Programs vary widely—from teaching English and Jordanian youth programs to arts, community development, and refugee support—and volunteers naturally want to ensure their time is impactful. However, even if a program sounds appealing, it may not be beneficial if the organization behind it lacks structure.

Another important consideration is your CV or résumé. Volunteering in Jordan can strengthen it significantly, especially for those pursuing careers related to education, Middle Eastern studies, humanitarian aid, social work, or intercultural communication. Volunteers often develop valuable skills such as adaptability, teamwork, problem-solving, and cross-cultural understanding.

Selecting the Right Time of Year

Choosing the right time of year for your volunteer experience is also important. Jordan has four distinct seasons, each offering different advantages. Winter can be chilly and rainy, particularly in Amman, where heating systems vary between homes.

Summer is hot and dry, though still manageable, especially in the evenings. Spring and autumn are considered the most pleasant seasons, with comfortable temperatures and beautiful landscapes—spring brings blooming wildflowers, while autumn offers warm days and cooler nights.

Selecting a season that suits your comfort and preferences will help ensure you have the best possible volunteer experience in Jordan.

Religious Holidays

Curious about how the religious aspect of everyday life would impact your time here?

Volunteering During Ramadan?

Jordan, including Amman, experiences noticeable changes during the holy month of Ramadan, so it is important to check when it occurs, as the dates shift each year. Some organizations may limit or pause volunteer activities during Ramadan due to reduced schedules, lower demand, or changes in community routines. While Ramadan is a beautiful and spiritually significant time in Jordan, international volunteers may find it challenging because most Jordanians fast from sunrise to sunset for 30 days.

This means you will be expected to avoid eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours as a sign of respect. However, many internationals choose to fast alongside Jordanians to show solidarity, deepen cultural understanding, or simply experience the month from within the community.

Other Jordanian Holidays

If you plan to volunteer for a short period—such as 1–2 weeks—it is important to research major Jordanian holidays beforehand to see whether they overlap with your schedule. Experiencing holidays can be meaningful, but some celebrations temporarily disrupt daily life, which may affect volunteer activities or organizational availability.

Jordan has two major Islamic holidays each year: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, and like Ramadan, their dates change annually. During Eid, many shops, schools, and organizations close for several days or operate on reduced hours. Jordan’s Christian communities also observe important holidays, especially Christmas and Easter, although these usually have less impact on public services. Still, both Western and Eastern churches may celebrate on different dates, resulting in multiple observances. Make sure to check when holidays occur, as you may want to experience some celebrations or avoid scheduling disruptions.

Volunteering With the Excellence Center in Amman

The Excellence Center offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities in Jordan, with several programs designed to help you engage with local communities while deepening your understanding of Jordanian culture. While it is still essential to research which program best fits your interests, the process is made easier by the variety of options available—and you can even combine two programs if you wish. You can volunteer for anywhere from one to thirteen weeks, and volunteers are welcome throughout the entire year.

The school blends the structure and reliability of a professional educational institution with the community connections and outreach capacity of a well-established local organization. Former participants highly recommend it and offer flexible terms for all programs. The center has a warm, international atmosphere where volunteers from around the world work alongside permanent Jordanian staff, creating ideal conditions for cultural exchange. Being surrounded daily by native Arabic speakers also helps volunteers improve their language skills quickly and naturally.

We provide comfortable accommodation for all volunteers, either in nearby apartments or with host families (typically offered to female volunteers). Our center is located in the heart of Amman, surrounded by shops, cafés, restaurants, and essential services, making everyday life convenient and enjoyable.

Amman itself is an incredible city to live and volunteer in—vibrant, welcoming, and rich with history. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Amman offers a blend of ancient heritage and modern urban life. Locals are famously friendly, and despite being a large capital city, Amman maintains the warm, communal atmosphere that Jordan is known for. You’ll find plenty of cafés to relax in, markets to explore, and cultural sites to visit. The city’s central location also makes it easy to take day trips to places like Jerash, Madaba, the Dead Sea, or even Petra. Volunteering here gives you a unique window into daily Jordanian life and the traditions that shape it.

Volunteering in the Summer

Summer is our busiest season, as we host international volunteers, interns, and Arabic students from June through September—when many people around the world have academic breaks, extended holidays, or seasonal flexibility. While any time of year is a wonderful time to join us, summer brings an especially vibrant community atmosphere with even more new people to meet and connect with. And it’s not just students—graduates, professionals, gap-year travelers, and others seeking cultural immersion in Jordan also join us during this time.

If you are a current student, we can provide documentation to support academic credit for your volunteer period, allowing you to advance your studies while making the most of your summer. Many participants appreciate that they can combine meaningful volunteer work with practical academic or professional development.

During our summer programs, you will study Arabic and have countless opportunities to practice it in authentic, everyday situations. You’ll also participate in a variety of trips in and around Amman, helping you become more familiar with Jordanian history, culture, and social life. Additionally, you will develop valuable professional skills and gain hands-on experience through your volunteer placement. Since Jordanian schools and universities are on break during the summer, there are often additional opportunities to work with youth—whether through teaching English, supporting educational activities, helping with sports programs, or contributing to community development projects.

Your Impact as a Volunteer

Through all of the programs we run from our center in Amman, we aim to make a meaningful, long-term difference for both the local Jordanian community and you as a volunteer by encouraging mutual understanding and genuine cultural exchange. We ensure that all of our programs are thoughtfully designed and carefully targeted so that they create real, positive outcomes and foster shared learning. Volunteering in Jordan offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the community, support local initiatives, and deepen your personal and cultural awareness. As with any meaningful experience, the more energy and commitment you bring to your program, the more rewarding it will be.

There are many ways to make an impact in Amman, depending on your skills, experience, interests, and the type of volunteer role you choose. For example, if you volunteer to teach English, you will provide Jordanian students with valuable language practice, helping them improve their communication skills and expand their educational and professional opportunities. English fluency is increasingly important in Jordan, especially for young people seeking jobs, scholarships, or international connections. Beyond teaching, our other volunteering programs allow you to support community development, youth programs, cultural initiatives, and local organizations, each offering different avenues to engage meaningfully with Jordanian society.
