Volunteer With Refugees in Jordan Program

Volunteer With Refugees in Jordan Program

The Volunteer With Refugees in Jordan Program offers a unique opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds—students, professionals, and retirees alike—to make a real difference in the lives of displaced communities living in and around Amman. Volunteers work directly with refugee children, youth, and women to strengthen educational, social, and interpersonal skills through structured lessons, workshops, and recreational activities. By actively participating in these programs, volunteers help bridge gaps in education and community support, while gaining firsthand experience in humanitarian work and intercultural engagement.

This program is not only a chance to give back but also an opportunity to build meaningful connections with local communities and develop practical skills applicable to careers in education, social work, or international development. Jordan hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world, including Syrians, Iraqis, and smaller communities from Yemen, Sudan, and Somalia.

While the country has established infrastructure to support displaced populations, many neighborhoods and refugee camps still face shortages in resources, educational materials, and extracurricular programming. Volunteers are therefore critical in helping to fill these gaps, creating safe, stimulating environments where children and youth can thrive. By working closely with local NGOs, community centers, and refugee organizations, volunteers contribute to initiatives that promote self-confidence, resilience, and educational advancement among marginalized populations.

Volunteer With Refugees in Jordan 2026–2027

The Excellence Center in Jordan is excited to announce its Volunteer With Refugees in Jordan Program for 2026–2027. This flexible, year-round program allows participants to work directly with refugee communities, assisting in educational and recreational programs, designing workshops, and supporting local organizations. Volunteers can choose durations ranging from 1 to 13 weeks, depending on their availability and objectives. This program is ideal for anyone passionate about education or humanitarian aid, and for those looking to gain hands-on experience in a meaningful, real-world setting.

By joining this program, volunteers not only support individuals—they actively contribute to the empowerment of entire communities. Participants play a vital role in enhancing the learning environment for refugee children and youth, creating recreational opportunities, and providing guidance that fosters growth and self-confidence. The experience allows volunteers to develop strong leadership and communication skills, while simultaneously deepening their understanding of Jordanian society and culture.

Supporting Local Communities

Volunteers in this program work alongside local organizations dedicated to improving the well-being of displaced populations. This includes community centers, NGOs, and educational institutions, all of which strive to provide low-cost or free educational opportunities to children and youth. By assisting in these programs, volunteers directly contribute to initiatives that reduce educational disparities and empower marginalized communities. Activities range from teaching English or Arabic, assisting with homework, and leading arts and sports workshops, to designing innovative skill-building sessions for youth and women. Each volunteer plays an essential part in creating a nurturing and stimulating environment for the community.

Furthermore, volunteers help strengthen the capacity of local organizations by supporting administrative work, outreach initiatives, and community events. By engaging in these activities, volunteers not only improve the quality of services available to refugees but also gain a comprehensive understanding of community-driven humanitarian efforts. This dual benefit ensures that both the volunteers and the local communities grow through shared learning and collaboration.

Volunteer With Refugees in Summer

While the program operates year-round, summer volunteering is particularly well-suited for university students seeking practical experience alongside their studies. The summer program is structured to provide intensive engagement with community projects, offering opportunities for academic credit through partnerships with universities where feasible. In addition to educational support, summer volunteers help run arts, sports, and recreational programs designed to create a safe and stimulating environment for children and youth. This combination of hands-on experience and cultural immersion provides a powerful learning experience, preparing students for careers in international development, education, or humanitarian aid.

Summer volunteers also benefit from tailored workshops and sessions that enhance their understanding of the social of Jordan. They gain insight into refugee issues, develop cross-cultural communication skills, and build networks with local professionals and organizations, ensuring a holistic and enriching experience.

About Displaced Peoples in Jordan

Jordan is a longstanding host of displaced populations from across the Middle East. Millions of refugees have sought safety in the country, fleeing conflict and instability in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and other nations. Despite the country’s reputation as a safe haven, displaced communities face significant challenges, including limited access to stable housing, employment, and educational resources. Local NGOs and international organizations play a critical role in filling these gaps, providing education, vocational training, healthcare, and psychosocial support to vulnerable populations.

Volunteering in Jordan offers a unique opportunity to engage with these communities directly. Refugees, especially children and youth, benefit greatly from consistent interaction with volunteers who provide both educational support and mentorship. Through active participation, volunteers help build resilience within these communities, fostering a sense of belonging and hope for the future.

Program Description

As a volunteer, your primary role will involve supporting educational and community initiatives within refugee neighborhoods. You will actively contribute to:

  • Teaching English, Arabic, or other academic subjects
  • Helping children and youth with homework and literacy activities
  • Leading recreational activities, including sports, arts, and games
  • Designing workshops to develop life skills for women and youth
  • Assisting NGOs and community centers in program delivery

Volunteers are encouraged to take initiative and develop innovative ways to engage participants, using their unique skills to create meaningful experiences. Whether leading a creative arts workshop, a sports session, or a cultural exchange event, your contributions have a lasting impact on the local community.

Other Ways to Help

For volunteers who prefer non-academic contributions, there are numerous opportunities to support refugees in other areas. Volunteers may organize creative or performing arts workshops, conduct fitness or wellness sessions, run career development programs, or assist NGOs with administration, outreach, or medical support. The program encourages volunteers to leverage their professional expertise or personal talents to enhance the services provided to refugees, fostering creativity and community empowerment.

Additionally, volunteers participate in Arabic lessons three hours per week, which equips them to communicate effectively with local participants and fosters deeper cultural understanding. These lessons, combined with hands-on volunteer work, create a truly immersive experience that enriches both the volunteers and the communities they serve.

Excursions and Cultural Activities

Volunteers have the opportunity to explore Amman and the surrounding areas through guided excursions. Visits include historical and cultural sites such as the Roman Theatre, Jerash, Madaba, and the Citadel, as well as opportunities to experience local markets and traditional Jordanian cuisine. These excursions are designed to provide volunteers with a broader perspective on Jordanian society while complementing their volunteer work. Cultural immersion allows volunteers to build meaningful relationships with locals, gain insights into community life, and develop a deeper appreciation for the country they are serving.

Program Components

  • Conduct workshops and recreational activities
  • Lead cultural, artistic, and skill-building programs
